Charitable Involvement

Abeer is deeply involved in charitable causes directed at children. She is a significant supporter of Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and the Hope for Henry Foundation.

The Al Otaibas established a connection to the Children’s National Medical Center in 2009, when the Ambassador coordinated a $150 million donation to the hospital from the government of Abu Dhabi. This sizable donation was used to create the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s.

But it wasn’t until her own baby daughter needed lung surgery in 2013 that Abeer came face-to-face with the outstanding medical care that Children’s National provides. This experience inspired Abeer to co-chair the 8th Annual Children’s Ball in 2014. The event raised a record-setting $10.7 million for the Children’s National Medical Center and its pediatric patients.

Abeer’s activities for Children’s are directed at improving access to specialty clinical services for the local Washington community and for international patients. She is also committed to supporting longer-term pediatric research at Children’s National that is making pediatric surgery more precise, less invasive, and pain-free.

In addition to her work for Children’s, Abeer serves as honorary chair of the board of directors for the Hope for Henry Foundation. Hope for Henry improves the hospital experience and outcomes for Washington’s sickest children and their families. The organization provides electronics, games, and parties for patients, arranges visits by superheroes, celebrities, and sports stars, and helps ease parents’ fears and anxieties. Hope for Henry helps pediatric patients and their families receive the best possible care during challenging times.

Abeer’s charitable involvement extends to her clothing brand SemSem. Founded by Abeer in 2015, SemSem supports charities that promote women’s empowerment. By folding philanthropy into her collection’s brand identity, Abeer hopes to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women and children around the world. For her debut SemSem collection, scheduled to launch for Resort 2016, Abeer will be supporting the Association for the Development & Enhancement of Women. This Egyptian non-profit organization helps women and girls in the region through the House of Eve shelter and the Girls’ Dreams Program.
